Pay Your Dues.

Have you paid your dues? Worked those grueling hours, climbed your way up from the bottom, and proved your worth? (Cue- Drake's "Started From the Bottom") It's a familiar mantra, but let's take a moment to reconsider. As recruiter, people leader, and strategist, I've witnessed the frustrations managers face with younger employees. They're seen as lacking patience, entitled, disregarding hierarchy, and skill-deficient. Yet, they demand to be paid well! But is the idea of "paying your dues" really relevant in today's world?

Breaking Down the Inequity-

The "Pay your Dues" mentality perpetuates inequity and places certain individuals at a disadvantage. Not everyone has the resources to endure prolonged periods of low pay or unfavorable conditions. Recognize that housing costs are skyrocketing, and not everyone has a safety net to rely on (like supportive parents). It disproportionately affects those from marginalized backgrounds who already face additional barriers.

Talent Drain-

When organizations cling to the "Pay your Dues" mentality, they risk losing talented individuals who see limited opportunities for growth, advancement, and earning potential. In today's dynamic landscape, maximizing your earning potential often requires changing companies every few years. As a result, organizations experience higher turnover rates and suffer a loss of valuable skills and potential.

 

The Toll on Morale and Engagement-

Enduring challenging conditions and feeling undervalued takes a toll on employee morale and engagement. It leads to decreased motivation, productivity, and overall job satisfaction. (What is that costing your business is dollars?) When your business is always on fire and there's no concerted effort to fix the underlying issues, your talented workforce will evacuate over being burned out.

 

Missed Innovation and Contributions-

By limiting growth and advancement solely based on tenure or endurance, companies miss out on the innovative ideas and contributions of talented individuals. Organizations that prioritize tenure over talent risk falling behind and being trapped in the mindset of "this is how we've always done it."
